Do Gluten Free Diets Work?

Gluten free diets are becoming more and more popular these days, even around here in Lacey, Olympia. Gluten is something found in barley, wheat, rye and oats but for those who suffer with NCGS (non-seliac gluten sensitivity) and other problems, gluten can be extremely dangerous hence the need for diets without gluten in. Moreover, many people simply seek a gluten free diet as part of an anti inflammatory diet.

Several studies have shown the benefits of gluten free and anti-inflammatory diets in that they can reduce cardiovascular risk as well as the metabolic syndrome and more. It has also shown that an anti inflammatory diet can reduce rheumatoid arthritis and other similar conditions such as joint inflammation, joint pain and even morning stiffness, all thanks to this diet.

Also, it is important to note the relationship between gluten free and anti inflammatory diets and chronic degenerative diseases in that these types of diet can help to reduce this low grade chronic inflammation.

There are many benefits to a gluten free diet, and thankfully there are many alternative versions of regular food that are gluten free. There are many gluten free breads for example. Despite this, is there anything that people undertaking a gluten free diet should know?

An article in Consumer Reports in November 2017 noted those gluten free foods made with rice flour may contain heavy metals and high levels of arsenic even. The other thing the article pointed out was that those eating gluten free diets may eat fewer foods with whole grain perhaps resulting in higher risk of heart disease.

But, the article neglected to point out that this deficit can easily be countered by eating more vegetables and fruits, and other foods high in fiber. There are many gluten free alternatives such as sorghum, teff, millet and buckwheat to name a few.

Gluten free diets certainly help in reducing inflammation and chronic pain, and should certainly be looked at as another way to helping maintain a good strong health and fitness, along with chiropractic care.
