The Nutritional Option for Migraines

by | Jul 16, 2019 | Headaches

Migraines are commonplace in society. Up to 22% of adults each year complain that they have suffered with at least one migraine in the past 12 months, and they can be difficult to control if they are more frequent. Chiropractic treatment can help a significant number of these patients if the cause emanates from the cervical area, and adjustments can be made with manual therapies. At Warwick Chiropractic, we have helped many of these people over the years. There is a nutritional option for migraines as well.

For others though, chiropractic treatment may not be the answer. Medications are still pretty much the go to on helping manage pain, but these come with side effects and other issues in themselves.

Nutrition is one other way of helping deal with migraines. A 2018 study of some 4300 migraine suffering adults was conducted and it was found that chocolate was the most likely food to increase the chances of a migraine. Aged cheese was next and other foods such as citrus fruit and alcohol (specifically red wine) were found to be other triggers. Moreover aspartame, caffeine, coffee, tea and even nuts were also found to be triggers.

Other studies highlighted a potential deficiency in  magnesium among migraine sufferers and found that taking magnesium supplements helped the frequency and intensity of migraines as well.

Taking a supplement like magnesium has other beneficial elements such as helping regulate blood sugars and blood pressure and even reduced the possibility of stroke.

So adhering to a diet that doesn’t include those foods that have been shown to trigger migraines is a great way to lessen the effects of the condition. So this nutritional option for migraines can also help.

Discovering natural and conservative ways to manage and control migraines is always going to be more beneficial long term. While medications can help, the long term use of such things can create other issues from the side effects and the longer one is able to control their migraines away from medication, the better.

If you are a migraine sufferer, the problem may be caused by cervical problems. These can be examined by us at Warwick Chiropractic and would be a great place to start in searching for a solution to your migraines. We should be able to reduce your migraines within a few visits if the issue is caused by cervical misalignment. If not, then that is one area ruled out and your search can continue in other areas to find the solution to your issue.
