General Chiropractic Questions

Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?

Adjustment of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. Just like when you crack your knuckles.

What is the purpose of an adjustment?

The adjustment helps to restore joint motion which reduces/inhibits pain, reduces/inhibits muscle spasm/tightness, reduces/inhibits joint inflammation and improves muscle balance.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

An adjustment is the primary method of treatment utilized by doctors of chiropractic. Chiropractic adjustments are performed on spinal and extremity joints that have been diagnosed as being hypomobile/fixated/dysfunctional. There are various adjustment techniques, but typically adjustments are applied by hand with a low force, controlled velocity contact on a specific joint or spinal segment.

What causes spinal or extremity joint fixation/dysfunction?

Loss of spinal or extremity joint mobility(joint dysfunction/fixation) can occur due to: 1. Macrotrauma such as a sport injury, work related injury or auto accident. 2. Microtrauma due to repetitive use, postural stress or poor ergonomics (work environment). An example of this would be carpal tunnel syndrome. 3. Emotional stress or mental abuse. 4. Chemical stress due to poor nutrition and diet.

How much education is required to become a doctor of Chiropractic?

Four years of chiropractic university is required to get your doctorate of chiropractic degree, after completing a bachelor’s degree with specific science-based undergraduate requirements. The chiropractic university classes are very similar to medical school, however, the chiropractic student will spend more time on anatomy, nutrition and chiropractic technique where as the medical student will spend more time on pathology and pharmacology.

Is chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic care is safe, effective, and generally free of side effects. In fact, recent studies have shown that patients with back pain have a higher chance of more serious side effects (including gastrointestinal bleeding) when taking over-the-counter (OTC) non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen.
