Neck pain in Lacey is the second most common cause of pain for patients coming in to see us. And it’s not surprising that this condition has also been becoming more and more prevalent in the past 20 years, given the changes in lifestyle, the changes in technology and the way we interact with it. Consider how many more people work in front of a computer now compared to 20 years ago. Consider the new technology of smart phones and the fact we spend so much of our time looking down, head forward looking at our phones. Steve Jobs never considered that… The fact is, more patients are suffering with neck pain now than ever before. The good news is we can help you!
There are many ways that you can be treated for your neck pain here at Warwick Chiropractic. Here are some of the things we can do to help you:
Chiropractic Care:
Spinal Manipulative Therapy
You’ve probably seen many of our videos where we adjust a patient’s neck in a fast but direct motion that causes the neck to make a cracking sound. This is known as spinal manipulative therapy and really helps to loosen the neck up and decompress the joints. The cracking sound isn’t bones cracking, despite popular thinking, it’s simply gases between the joints that become compressed through the quick motion that makes that sound. Here’s an example of this type of therapy:
Spinal Mobilization
A more slow and gentle approach occurs with spinal mobilization. Here the technique is aimed at providing traction and gentle therapy to help reduce compression of the neck joints and to open them out.
Other Manual Therapies:
Trigger Point
Trigger point techniques involve applying pressure to muscles that are tight or knotted that cause pain. Gentle therapy helps to loosen them up which will then reduce this muscle tension and thus decrease pain.
Massage
There are many forms of massage that can help to alleviate pain, promote relaxed muscles and reduce the tension around the neck.
Self Help
Exercises
We have many neck exercises we can prescribe to you based on your condition. Many of these exercises are in video form on this site, so if you forget what we have suggested, you can easily reference them. Often, therapies that we apply to you and the self care exercises you do form a great combination in helping you reduce your pain quicker.
Ice
Icing the area will give you relief too. There’s often a conflict of ice versus heat, but generally, in the conditions we help with, ice is the better of the two. Put an ice pack on your afflicted area for no more than 20 minutes at a time. Even cold showers for 30 seconds can help with pain relief. A good way to do this is to have your regular shower at your preferred temperature and then for the final 30 seconds, set to cold and then finish off.
So while neck pain in Lacey is becoming more and more common, we can help you in many ways to reduce it and even through maintenance afterwards, once a month or so, to help stay on top of it and prevent future flare ups is good for you too.
