Strange true story

Strange true story may change the way you look at health care and the treatments you choose…

Can A 129+ Year Old “Accidental Discovery” Relieve Back Pain, Headaches, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Fibromyalgia And More?

Find out what some leading health experts have to say…

The date was September 18, 1895. It was a day just like any other, except history was about to be made. There are differing accounts of this story… here’s the most popular…

D.D. Palmer was working late in his office on the corner of Second and Brady in downtown Davenport, Iowa.

Suddenly, a noisy fire truck screeched down the street. Palmer swung his neck around to peer out the open window.

When he did…he noticed Harvey Lillard… a janitor working nearby… didn’t react to the loud noise at all. He didn’t move a muscle.

Surprised at what he had just witnessed, Palmer approached Lillard to find out why he wasn’t startled by the passing fire truck.

As it turned out , Lillard was mostly deaf… But, he hadn’t always been that way.

Palmer patiently conversed with Lillard and discovered he had been able to hear most of his life.

Then one day, about 17 years earlier, while in a cramped, stooping position, Lillard felt something “pop” in his back… and when he stood back up…

He Couldn’t Hear A Thing!

Palmer speculated the popping in Lillard’s back and the sudden deafness must be connected.

At that time, Palmer was a “magnetic healer” and had studied human anatomy extensively.

Palmer examined Lillard by feeling his spine. He noticed a bump in the spot where Lillard claimed the popping had occurred.

Palmer thought one of Lillard’s spinal bones was out of place and that was the cause of his hearing loss.

Here’s what happened in Palmer’s own words, “I reasoned that if the vertebra was replaced, the man’s hearing should be restored… With this object in view, a half hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever, and soon the man could hear as before.”

The Cure For Deafness?

Palmer thought he had discovered the cure for deafness. So, he started advertising his new found cure and

patients came from all over to see him.

But something unexpected happened. Even though Palmer did not restore their hearing – his patients began to get relief for many other conditions, a very welcome side effect.

Patients began coming to Palmer with every condition under the sun including the flu, sciatica, migraine headaches, stomach complaints, epilepsy and heart trouble.

D.D. Palmer claimed to get good results with many of these conditions with what he called “hand treatments.” Later he began using the word Chiropractic, from the Greek word Chiro – meaning hand – and practic – meaning practice or operation.

Within 3 years of curing Harvey Lillard’s deafness, Palmer renamed his clinic the Palmer School & Infirmary of Chiropratic and started accepting students to teach his brand new healing method to.

Palmer Jailed For His Discovery!

But it wasn’t all glory for Palmer. Soon after his discovery he was brutally attacked by the more established and politically powerful medical community. He was labeled a “charlatan” and a “quack.”

In 1905, Palmer was indicted for practicing medicine without a license. He was sentenced to 105 days in jail and was required to pay a $350 fine. He paid his fine after serving 23 days of his sentence.

Both Chiropractic and medicine have changed since those days nearly 100 years ago. Sadly, many in medicine continued their unwarranted assault on the healing ways of Chiropractic.

Most of that ended when five Chiropractors, lead by Chester Wilk, sued the American Medical Association for illegal conspiracy to destroy Chiropractic. On August 24, 1987, after endless wrangling in the courts, U.S. District Court judge Susan Getzendanner ruled that the AMA and its officials were guilty of attempting to eliminate the Chiropractic profession. She called the AMA’s conduct “a conspiracy among the AMA and its members…in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act.” She ordered the AMA to admit the “lawlessness of its conduct,” to change its ways and to publish her entire order in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Here’s what all this means for you:

Today many Medical Doctors and well educated Doctors of Chiropractic work hand-in-hand to give patients the best possible care.

Everyone knows that Chiropractic is not the cure for deafness D.D. palmer once thought it was but Chiropractic can help many conditions such as back pain, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome and fibromyalgia, just to name a few.

In fact, after an extensive study of all currently available care for low back problems, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research—a federal government research organization—recommended that low back pain sufferers choose the most conservative care first, and it recommended spinal manipulation as the only safe and effective, drugless form of initial professional treatment for acute low back problems in adults.

A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.
