We see many patients at Warwick Chiropractic here in Lacey, and have seen chiropractic care help the vast majority of people. Sometimes it’s good to understand why headaches occur and have a little look at the science behind it, and to fully understand what’s going on.
Of course, there are many different forms headaches take. A lot of them center around the upper part of the neck and the head. Consider the structure of the neck from the muscles holding head and neck together, the ligaments, blood vessels providing blood to and from the brain, and the nerves, and much more. All these vital components that are so tightly related to the head and the neck are also many of the reasons that when one experiences pain, the other also is affected.
A key component is known as the myodural bridge which is located between a muscle in the back of the neck (the rectus capitus posterior minor) and the dura mater which is a covering protecting the spinal cord. It sits very closely to the cervical nerve, the veins and vertebral artery.
This can cause headaches and it does this when tension is applied to it, and this in turn applied pressure to the dura and tenses it up. The dura normally infolds, but the excess tension prevents this and so causes pain, such as a headache.
Whiplash is a common injury in auto accidents and this can cause undue stress on these components, causing dysfunction and again causes undue stress to the dura, resulting in headaches. If this injury worsens it can lead to longer term headaches and problems.
The effects of this is a throbbing pain on one side of the head and sometimes behind the eye socket. The base of the head can also be tender to the touch and movement of the head can amplify the pain. The headache may last up to a few days even.
Strong research has shown that with soft tissue therapy and chiropractic manipulation, these headaches can be eliminated or drastically reduced.
