What About Taking Opioids to Manage Pain???
Many people in US and the world over rely on opioids to manage pain, both prescribed and non-prescription medication. Over-the-counter pain relievers are probably the most abused drugs than any other legal or illegal drug substance. Unfortunately, some people have become so dependent on pain relievers and other over-the-counter drugs, so much so that if they stopped without seeking alternatives or managing withdrawal symptoms they may just drop dead.
Some Stats
Statistically speaking, seniors in the United States consume about 40% of prescription drugs and slightly over 30% of over-the-counter drugs. This loosely translates to an average of about 15 prescription drugs per year for each individual. Unfortunately, over 20% of this drug use in seniors is considered unnecessary and pose long term health risks. In fact, most of the diverse negative drug reactions and side effects involve the elderly.
Some of the common health conditions that drive most people and particularly the elderly to lean so much on the pain relievers for pain management include headaches, neck pain, back pain, and joint pains. Top on the list of the most used, and perhaps most abused pain management drugs are the Opioids.
Why are Opiods Prescribed?
Opioids to manage pain are commonly prescribed for pain management because they are effective in calming many types of pain. The most common opioids used include codeine, fantanyl, hydrocone, methadone, morphine among others. However, not many people know that opioids are actually classified as narcotics and can be quite dangerous when abused.
There is recent study that focused on the effect of use of opioids for pain management in people with chronic low back pain (cLBP) and the results were worrisome. The research revealed that patients taking opioids experienced some abnormal brain activity during sleep compared to patients who used non-pioids. We all know the detrimental effects of disturbed or insufficient sleep to our overall health and longevity.
The study confirmed some of the well documented side effects of using opiods including nausea, constipation, dizziness, vomiting and dizziness. As if that is not enough, medications used to counter the sides effects of opioids also come with additional side effects such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, vomiting, nausea, sweating and flatulence. This again means that you need even more prescription drugs to counter these additional side effects. The end result is a dangerous series of accumulated negative side effects that worsens, rather than improve the overall condition.
The bottom line…
In as much as some people with chronic conditions need to take certain medication to function properly or at least stay alive, it is highly recommended that you minimize taking such medication as much as possible. Many medical practitioners are now recommending non-surgical, non-drug and non-intrusive options such as chiropractor care.
You can never go wrong with chiropractor care since it has not only been proven to be safe, but also help patients with conditions such as back pain, joint pain and neck-pain recover much faster. Additionally, the health benefits of chiropractor care last longer compared to the drugs taken for the same condition. The trick is finding a well experienced chiropractor care provider.
