What to Do if You’ve Been in an Accident

Auto accidents happen all the time. It takes a wrong decision or slow reactions and boom, you’ve been hit. With more and more drivers on the road every year, accidents are more and more common. While new technology has been designed to help curb these incidents, such as lane departure warnings, blind spot warnings and auto braking systems etc, nothing is perfect.

So what should you do if you’ve been in an accident?

Get checked over

The number one thing is to go to get checked over. Even if you’ve only been in a minor accident, a trip to your local doctor or chiropractor can at least look you over and make sure you’re ok or apply applicable treatments. Obviously, if it’s a bit worse than that, visit your ER, just to be sure.

Other party’s details

You will need to get any other drivers details and insurance info as well. If you were not at fault, the other driver’s insurance is liable to take care of any associated costs including vehicle repairs and any medical treatment you may need. Moreover, it should also pay out for any lost time at work.

Your accident report

You will also need what’s known as an accident report. An accident report is normally created by the police department that arrived at the scene of the accident. It can take several days before this is available but you can also obtain it through sites such as buycrash.com for a small fee.

Your accident report is absolutely vital and fundamental for any insurance claim. You need this as soon as possible.

It is also important to document everything relating to your crash. We’ve already covered any other party’s insurance and details, but if there were any witnesses you should also get their information as well.

Should you use an attorney?

The accident process can be tricky. Ultimately you will be dealing directly with insurance companies. We all know that insurance companies want to pay out as little as possible, so it is likely they will offer you a sum that is well below what you are entitled to. We would always recommend using an accident attorney. Not only do they know the law, but they also know how to talk and deal with insurance companies and will work hard on your behalf.
