Why Treat Auto Accident Injuries Immediately?
Car accidents happen in seconds — even in Lacey and Olympia — and the effects can last for years. The pain you feel after a crash is your nervous system signaling that something is wrong. Injuries involving whiplash primarily affect the joints (facets) and discs, and symptoms may not appear for hours or even days after the accident.
One of the biggest misconceptions about soft tissue injury is that it will heal on its own within a month or two. In reality, untreated whiplash injuries frequently heal incorrectly — causing muscle adhesions, trigger points and disc dysfunction, leaving you managing pain rather than resolving it.
There are two critical reasons to act immediately:
To ensure your injuries are treated properly and heal correctly — and to obtain all necessary documentation from medical professionals to prepare a claim against insurance to cover treatment and other costs.
Getting seen quickly means your injury is assessed while it’s fresh — and documented at the time of the accident, so the record reflects what actually happened to you.

“If you’ve been in a car crash, even a minor one, your body may have suffered more than you realize. Whiplash and auto accident injuries can lead to headaches, neck pain, stiffness, and long-term problems if left untreated.”

Whiplash Treatment in Lacey, WA
Whiplash happens when the head is thrown through a range of motion the neck wasn’t ready for — most often in a rear-end collision, though a side impact or a fall can do it too. The injury is to the joints, discs, ligaments and muscle of the neck, and the symptoms can take a day or two to arrive.
Treatment starts with an examination to work out what’s actually been injured, and imaging where it’s warranted. From there the aim is restoring movement to the joints that have stiffened and settling the muscle guarding around them. Most people improve over a course of visits rather than a single one, and Dr. Warwick will tell you what to expect at the start rather than at the end.
Whiplash doesn’t always show up as neck pain. Some people notice ringing in the ears or changes in their vision instead, and a common question is whether a cervical collar is needed at all.
If your neck is stiff and sore after a collision, you don’t need an appointment. Walk in for an assessment.
What Happens to Your Body in a Crash
Whiplash occurs when the head moves in an uncontrolled direction, straining the joints, discs, muscles, ligaments, and nerves along the entire spine — not just the neck. Here’s what can be affected:
Cervical Spine (Neck)
Seven vertebrae take the brunt of whiplash. Injury to the upper cervical joints commonly refers pain into the head; lower cervical injury causes forward/backward movement restriction and is the most common area for arthritis to develop.
Thoracic Spine (Mid-Back)
The 12 thoracic vertebrae and rib cage are frequently injured in crashes. Seatbelts can cause breast, chest, and mid-back injuries that are often overlooked in initial ER assessments.
Lumbar Spine (Low Back)
The lumbar spine is frequently overlooked as an injured area because of its distance from the neck. Seatbelt forces travel the entire spine and low back injuries are common even in low-impact accidents.
Discs & Nerves
Disc tears, cracks, or fissures can cause the liquid center to migrate and rupture. Compressed nerve roots send pain, numbness, and weakness into the arms and hands.
Soft Tissue
Ligaments, articular capsules, muscles, and tendons are all vulnerable. Fiber tears that heal badly create adhesions and trigger points, leading to chronic muscle spasm and joint compression.
Symptoms May Be Delayed
Headaches, stiffness, dizziness, and arm tingling may not appear for 24–72 hours after your accident. Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen — get checked now.
What To Do After a Car Accident
Follow these steps to protect both your health and your insurance claim:
Step 1: Go to the ER
Go to the ER first to rule out serious or life-threatening injuries. The ER will stabilize you and clear you of immediate danger — but their job is not to treat soft tissue injuries.
Step 2: Get a Full Exam
Even if you feel fine, get a full chiropractic exam as soon as possible. Soft tissue injuries — the kind the ER won’t catch — need to be treated early before they heal incorrectly.
Step 3: Document Everything
Warwick Chiropractic provides all necessary injury documentation for your insurance claim. Keep all records from every provider. If symptoms appear years later, undocumented injuries will not be covered.
PIP Insurance & Documentation
We Handle the Documentation So You Can Focus on Healing
Washington insurers are required to offer Personal Injury Protection (PIP), but drivers can decline it in writing — so check whether it’s on your policy. If it is, PIP covers your medical treatment regardless of who was at fault, up to your policy limits, and we bill it directly.
At Warwick Chiropractic, we are experienced in working with PIP claims, L&I, and third-party insurance. We provide complete, professionally prepared injury documentation that gives your claim the best possible foundation — and we work alongside attorneys when needed.
“Time is of the essence. Getting treated immediately not only helps your injuries heal correctly — it ensures your injuries are properly documented for your insurance claim.”

Hi, this is Dr. David Warwick of Warwick Chiropractic in Lacey, Olympia, Washington — your local Seattle–Tacoma chiropractor here in the South Puget Sound area. Today’s video is: what is documentation of an injury?
Any good accident doctor will be able to examine, diagnose and treat your injury and get you feeling better again. While this is happening, all this information related to your injury needs to be properly documented. This means that you have reports, diagnosis, treatments, as well as x-rays, maybe secondary referrals or even second opinions relating to your injury.
This documentation is essential when submitting a claim against insurance to cover your injury treatments and get you to feel better again. This is why you should always choose a doctor who specializes in the area and treats patients in this way every week.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by the sudden back-and-forth motion of the head, most often from car accidents. It strains muscles, ligaments, discs, and nerves in the neck and along the entire spine. Symptoms may appear immediately or up to 72 hours after the accident.
Do I need to see a chiropractor even if I feel fine after an accident?
Yes. Many auto accident injuries — particularly soft tissue injuries — don’t produce obvious symptoms immediately. Inflammation and nerve involvement can take hours or days to manifest. Getting examined immediately documents the injury and allows treatment before incorrect healing begins.
Does PIP insurance cover chiropractic care in Washington State?
Washington insurers are required to offer Personal Injury Protection (PIP), but drivers can decline it in writing — so the first thing to check is whether it’s on your policy. If it is, PIP covers your chiropractic care after a collision regardless of who was at fault, up to your policy limits. Warwick Chiropractic bills PIP directly and provides the documentation your claim needs.
How long does whiplash treatment take?
Most patients at Warwick Chiropractic experience significant improvement within a small number of focused visits. Treatment duration depends on the severity of the injury, but Dr. Warwick’s approach is always short-term and goal-oriented — no unnecessary extended treatment plans.
What documentation will I receive for my insurance claim?
Warwick Chiropractic provides complete, professionally prepared injury documentation including diagnosis records, treatment notes, and supporting materials for insurance claims and attorney use.
Can chiropractic care help with headaches after a car accident?
Yes. Many post-accident headaches are not true headaches but cervicogenic pain — originating from the neck and cervical spine. Treatment aims at restoring movement in the upper neck, which is why many people find the headaches ease as the neck does.
Should I talk to my insurance company before seeing a chiropractor?
Do both. Tell your own insurer promptly — your policy likely requires it, and it’s how you open your PIP claim. Be more careful with the other driver’s insurer; you’re not obliged to give a recorded statement before you’ve been examined. Meanwhile, get examined. Dr. Warwick’s team is experienced in working alongside both insurance companies and personal injury attorneys.
What makes Warwick Chiropractic the right choice for auto accident care in Lacey?
